I receive messages like this everyday asking for help to their family dog. I want to give you an idea on why this isn’t an easy answer.
Working with animals has always been a passion of mine. It never mattered what kind of animal it was, or what its needs were. Wanting to be a vet was a dream of mine, but when it was time to be in school and college, I was off living a dream working with racehorses and traveling.
In 2018, I was introduced to The Science of Skin and Coat class given by Dr. Cliff Faver in Houston, TX. After attending this class, I knew what I was meant to do with the next chapter of my life. Once my heart knew what that chapter was, my journey as a Certified Pet Aesthetician began.
Upon completion of my certification, I immediately used my new knowledge to keep my client’s dogs’ skin and coat as healthy as possible and using Iv San Bernard products made that possible. When we saw a dog that needed help, we also had the knowledge and products to help with these problems.
Pearl’s Place takes skin and coat health to a completely new level. My mentor, teacher and friend, Dr. Faver, is also a veterinarian and during class he would explain how he and most vets would treat skin issues. Antibiotics, Apoquel, medicated shampoo 2-3 times a week; treating from the inside out, which can take time. One of the reasons it takes time is because the blood supply does not go to the surface of the skin, so the medication will only go so far and then you have to wait for new skin to grow.
As a Pet Aesthetician, we are taught to treat from the outside in. We use Iv San Bernard products; they are the top of the line cosmetics for animals. All their products were designed as human products and then they changed the formulas to best fit an animals PH.
When we see dogs that are in need of help, this is our process:
- Step One – we like to look at the vets notes and see what their diagnoses are.
- Step Two – if the dog has dry crusty flakey skin, we will make up a mask to hydrate the skin.If we have ooey, gooey, wet sores, we will make up a red clay to dry them out.
- Step Three – we will froth a combination of therapy shampoos which consists of an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-yeast shampoo to start to kill as many issues as we can.
- Step Four – once the shampoo has been on for 5-10 minutes, we place the dog into the Hydro-massage ozone spa for 10-20 minutes. Then rinse completely.
- Step Five – whenever you shampoo, you should always hydrate to return the oils you justremoved from the dog. Apply the conditioner and allow it to remain on the dog for 5-10 minutesand then rinse.
- Step Six- dry the coat after applying a hydration skin.
- Step Seven – for our skin restoration dogs, we apply hydration spray and triple oil to theirbody twice a day.
- Step Eight – repeat all steps 2-3 times a week, for 6-8 weeks depending on the severity of theskin and coat.The first step to healing is to make sure the skin is healthy; sick skin can’t grow hair.This is the how we help our dogs heal at Pearl’s Place. If you ask me how to fix your dog and my explanation is vague, this is why. We have a cabinet full of products that each have a specific roll in the process of returning the skin back to a healthy state. I hope you continue to follow our journey in helping us heal them.
